Several students at Milton Somers Middle School were walking in the hallway with a staffer, when they began pulling on locker doors, causing some to open along the way.

According to a spokesperson from the Charles County Sheriff's Office, as the students were instructed to stop with the shenanigans, the staff member spotted what appeared to be a gun protruding from a backpack in one of the lockers.

The School Resource Officer assigned to the building was called and it was determined that the "weapon" was, in fact, a realistic-looking toy gun.

Administrators were able to locate the student assigned to the locker, who was placed in a separate room, where he struck a classmate who was already inside; however, the teen will not face criminal charges due to Maryland law, officials said.

"Under Maryland law, the involved student cannot be charged with a criminal offense;" they added, "however, the Charles County Department of Juvenile Services was contacted."
